If you suspect you have a gas leak in your home, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergencies number immediately on 0800 111 999. If it is safe to do so, turn off your gas supply. The gas mains taps should be beside your gas meter; this can be turned off by moving the handle a quarter turn until it’s at 90 degrees from the pipe to shut off the gas supply.

Below are some Do’s and Don’ts in the event you smell gas.370_fire.png
Do

  • Ensure fresh air enters the property by opening doors and windows.
  • Turn off the gas supply to the property, if it is safe to do so.
  • Leave the property.
  • Call the National Gas Emergencies helpline on 0800 111 999. If you are using a mobile phone, ensure you are outside the property first.
  • Follow any advice given and wait for an engineer to arrive.

Don’t

  • Use any naked flame such as when lighting a match or cigarette.
  • Switch anything on/off.
