Glasgow West HA is proud of its roots, originating from Hillhead HA in 1978 and maturing over the years with the transfer of housing stock from six other local housing associations.

Hillhead

Hillhead HA is the founder association.  It was established in 1978 by members of the Wellington and Baptist Churches, with the aim of providing much needed housing for the elderly and of preventing the further decay of Hillhead’s fine Victorian buildings.

Between 1978 and 1990, 95 flats were acquired. During this time management and developments services were provided by Thenew HA from Derby Street and then North Claremont Street.  At the end of 1990, the Management Committee of Hillhead HA appointed its own staff, providing a service from a basement flat at 22 Hillhead Street.

Kelvin

Kelvin HA managed 20 units within two projects situated just off Great Western Road.  Following a Transfer of Engagements in 1988, Kelvin HA’s properties were transferred to Hillhead HA, increasing Hillhead’s housing stock to 115 units.

Philemon

Philemon HA was formed in 1979 by a group of friends disturbed by the poor condition of inner city housing.  Like Hillhead HA, Philemon had charitable status and received services from Thenew HA. Following a Transfer of Engagements in 1993, 117 units transferred to Hillhead HA, resulting in a doubling of Hillhead’s stock to 332 properties.

Sandyford

Sandyford HA was formed in 1978 by local residents with the aim of rehabilitating Below Tolerable Standard (BTS) housing.  It was a traditional community based housing association operating solely in the Anderston area.

In late 1995, following a direction by the Secretary of State under Section 32 of the Housing Association Act (1985), Sandyford’s 343 rented units were transferred to Hillhead HA, resulting in a further doubling of Hillhead’s stock.

As part of the transfer from Sandyford, Hillhead HA also inherited the management of more than 400 commercial units and tenemental flats, the latter of which were previously tenanted and sold over the years to tenants exercising their Right to Buy.  Glasgow West HA continue to provide good quality, competitive factoring services to these residents.

Burnbank Gardens

Burnbank Gardens HAs was formed in 1966 by a group of local Owner Occupiers and Tenants concerned about the conditions of privately rented accommodation and the demolition of adjacent properties.  It was one of the first housing associations in Glasgow to register with the Housing Corporation (now Communities Scotland).

In 1996 a Transfer of Engagements from Burnbank Gardens HA took place and Hillhead HA’s stock increased by a further 70 units.

It was just shortly after the Burnbank Gardens transfer that Hillhead HA changed its name to Glasgow West HA to reflect the changing housing and tenancy profiles and the extension of the Association’s geographical area of operation.

Avalon Corner Housing Co-Operative Limited

The last Transfer of Engagements took place on 28 June 2002 from Avalon Corner Housing Co-operative Limited.

Avalon Corner group was founded in 1982 by a group of very determined residents whose perseverance resulted in the registration of the first par-value coop in the West of Scotland.  By 1986, 28 flats and 3 shops had been fully refurbished by the Co-operative.
